Follow these three simple
recommendations to review the translation and whether it
was created by a good translator. Did you translate the text yourself,
hire a translation agency or a self-employed translator? Was the
translator a native speaker? After all, this is the least
important. It is important that the result is a good translation. A common
problem when translating texts is the assessment of the quality
of the final result.
One often wonders how one can check the
quality of the translation if one does not master the target language. So
we've prepared a few tips for you.
1. Examination of the translation to the target group
Each translation has a target
group. These are the people for which the translation was
created in the first place. Therefore, the most important thing is that
they understand them.
When it comes to general advertising
material intended for the general public, the translation must be understood by
everyone. Choose a native speaker of that language and
see if they understand the text and if they may notice errors. If your
target group is made up of scientists working in a narrow, specialized field,
you will need to ask one of them to review the text.
Don't know a native
speaker? Get help with the Internet. Find
the ideal reader of your text in specialist forums. Use web pages where
you can ask questions (Ask. com, Yahoo! Answers, etc.).
Note
that the text should be checked by an ideal reader. If the text is
intended for nurses, it should be checked by a nurse, not a pilot.
2. Examination of the translation in the competition
So competition is good. This is
definitely true for translations.
When you translate promotional material, a
website or software, you can easily check which terms are used by the
competition. Verify that the terms used by your translator match the terms
used by the competitor. This should be a sign that a good translator
created the translation.
Remember
this: stick to the terminology your readers know. Do not allow the
translator to use words that are not used by default in your area.
